Summer at London Play

27 July 2015

There are really exciting things planned for the next couple of months at London Play and we wanted to make sure that you know about them and give you the chance to get involved - so here goes!

  • Play Works - proving the social impact of adventure playgrounds

Firstly, we are very pleased to welcome Tilean Clarke to the London Play team, who has joined us to run our new three year Play Works project, funded by the City Bridge Trust. Tilean will be working with the super-duper evaluation team from A5cend and 12 adventure playgrounds across London to capture, quantify and shout about the huge contribution they make to all sorts of social outcomes in their communities. We have already had a fair few playgrounds let us know that they'd like to be among the 12 - but this is a final call to ask any others who are interested to let us know - and let us know NOW! Please call or email by 24 July latest.

  • Go Kart Build and Race - and(!) Girl Kart Grand Prix

We are delighted to tell you that, to make up for there not being a Go Kart event last year, this year there will be two! The Go Kart Build and Race, sponsored by the Henry Surtees Foundation, is on Friday 7 August at Mudchute Farm. Teams of 10 will each get a pile of wood, some tools and four hours in which to build a go-kart from scratch and then race. Sound like fun? There are few places still left but you will need to be quick! If you know a group of young people who'd be up for the challenge, make sure they know about it. Entry forms can be downloaded from our website and need to be in by 24 July - sooner if possible. Please call or email with your completed entry or for more information.

The inaugural Girl Kart Grand Prix (same place, same format but for young women and girls only) will be on Saturday 5 September and entry forms will be available soon. The Manufacturing Technologies Association is making this event possible so big thanks to them.

  • Adventure Play Awards - please enter - and spread the word

Finally… we are now inviting entries for the 2015 London Adventure Play Awards. The deadline is not until Monday 28 September but we wanted to give adventure playgrounds, schools, play streets and playschemes plenty of advance warning. Entries are in the form of short films made by the children and young people that play at these settings - can you encourage anyone and everyone you know to enter? Especially schools! Here's the link:

Don't forget too that if you have news or events that you want to publicise, or if you need advice or information on play-related matters, that we are here to help.

Thanks for your continuing support - with our best wishes for a sun-soaked, fun-filled, playful summer ahead, from the team at London Play
